According to ANTARES PROPERTIES, a builder & property developer, a standard 5 ft x 8 ft bathroom renovation costs between $12k – $18k:

$10k or less

This is the do-it-yourself (DIY) option.

If you’re capable of doing demolition work, can lay mortar and tile in a straight line, and are versatile enough to do electrical and plumbing work, then this is the way to go as it’s the cheapest route.

$15k or less

If you’re too busy to do the work yourself (or not as handy) you may want to hire a general contractor (GC) or project manager with access to the right set of tradespeople.

Except you still have to choose colors, fixtures & finishes which some GCs do and some don’t.

$20k or less

If you want to hire an interior designer to select and coordinate colours, finishes & fixtures to create an aesthetically pleasing result –  and also increase your home’s resale value – then you may want to hire one in addition to a GC.

Some interior designers can project manage renovations themselves, so you may want to find out if they offer this service as well.

$20k – $30k

If you’re doing a more complex renovation for a larger bathroom that requires obtaining city hall permits – especially if you’re planning to change layouts and install new electrical and plumbing connections – then this is where it can get really pricey.
